Is Scalp Micropigmentation a new hair loss solution?
No it is not. You will have seen the adverts and social media posts and photos claiming it is the “newest hair loss solution”. This is all misleading, Scalp SMP is not a new hair loss solution. Hair Tattoo, Scalp Micro Pigmentation, SMP, whatever you wish to call it, has been around for over 15 years. I know this because I have had Scalp SMP myself for 15 years! Do not be fooled by social media claims. This is generally newer clinics who are not that knowledgeable.
What Ink is used during Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment?
At Ultimate Scalp SMP I only use the best Carbon based pigments that do NOT turn blue! NOT tattoo ink!
Is Scalp SMP the same as a Skin Tattoo?
Absolutely not, I do NOT use tattoo ink (that turns blue). I only use the best Organic Carbon based Pigments designed especially for Scalp SMP. The art of Scalp SMP is entirely different to the art of traditional skin tattooing.
Do you tattoo hair strokes or lines on the scalp?
No, Scalp SMP is designed only to replicate the look of shaved stubble/hair follicles on the head. We are not attempting to draw actual hair on your head, no lines or strokes, only the finest of dots, in some cases, thousands of them, all fractions of a mm in diameter!
Does the Scalp SMP procedure hurt?
Most SMP clients find the entire scalp procedure relaxing and often fall asleep during their treatments. On the scale of 1 to 10, most customers state that their discomfort is very minimal around the 3 (1 being the lowest). The urge to sneeze may occur when certain areas of the scalp are stimulated!
How long does it take for SMP to heal?
Some Scalp SMP technicians state that 1 week is enough time to allow for healing between your micropigmentation sessions. Experience over the years proves that a 2 week healing period is required, as this offers a true reflection of how your pigment will fade, absorb and settle. I have also noticed a significant difference between the 1 and 2 week healing period in terms of dot size and how well the pigment is retained in clients scalps. Different parts of the head can fade more than others and 1 week is NOT enough time to judge and add more ink to the skin! After 2 weeks, I then may even go 1 shade of pigment darker to achieve the natural shade and density of a real shaved full head of hair.
Will I have instant results after each SMP Scalp appointment?
Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation leaves immediate pigments (dots) in the scalp resembling the appearance of shaved hair follicles. However, the entire procedure is spread across 4 separate sessions to achieve the final look of natural density. The density is added during the latter stages of the 4 treatments. The 1st session is more sparse and intentionally lighter in shade to see how your scalp heals and absorbs the pigment.
Does the Scalp SMP procedure leave my head red or swollen?
There is a very minor low level of redness to the scalp after each SMP treatment, but the glow tends to vanish within a few days. Your scalp should not be swollen. The scalp heals relatively quickly and some clients redness has faded even before the session is finished.
Do you use numbing cream on my head before my Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment?
Absolutely NOT! If Scalp SMP Technicians are using numbing cream on your Scalp, then you must ask them why!? This is bad practice and they have been trained incorrectly and to go too deep into the skin tissue. This will cause discomfort and potential blow outs. A blow out is when the SMP Pigment Ink is pushed too deep into the scalps skin layers until it hits the fatty tissue. The fatty tissue acts like a sponge and can cause the ink to “blow out” and spread beneath the skins surface. The Dot impressions can then merge together and look like a big blob on the skin! Scalp SMP Treatment should NOT need any numbing cream before or after as the depth of the Micro Needles SHOULD NOT be going deep enough to need it!
How do you design my new SMP hairline?
Your new SMP Hairline should always be aligned with ones age. Several measurements are taken and a soft line is drawn on with a wax pencil after consulting the clients requirements. I do NOT rush the hairline design as the framing of the face is one the most crucial parts of Scalp Micro Pigmentation. I can offer soft graduated density hairlines which is our preferred style, as no ones hair line is dense and abrupt in real life. Minor adjustments can be made to the hairline as the treatment and sessions progress. We can always slightly lower or reshape a hairline to suit your requirements.
Can I wash my newly treated Scalp?
You should NOT get your scalp wet for 4 days immediately after treatment. After the 4th day you can gently cleanse the scalp with water alone. Do NOT use any shower gels, soaps or cleansers until day 7. This applies to each of your 4 Scalp SMP treatments at Ultimate Scalp SMP Leicester. Aftercare leaflets are provided for all clients.
Can I go to the gym or workout immediately after Scalp SMP treatments?
You should NOT sweat heavily immediately after scalp micropigmentation as the pores can flush out the pigment along with your bodies sweat. Avoid the gym, exercise & activities that exert your body to the point of sweating. This will undo all of our hard work.
Will Scalp Micro Pigmentation fade over time?
The Carbon based pigment used for SMP treatment on the scalp is designed to be semi permanent. Over time the replicated hair follicle impression will fade. The fading process is indeed natural, but can be delayed by not exposing your Scalp to the sun (always use factor 30SPF or higher sun cream – or cover up with a cap) – Top ups are required usually every few years. I can provide you with sun creams if required.
Do I need to have my SMP Scalp Treatment topped up again?
As mentioned briefly above, due to the nature of the carbon pigment and the effects of the sun, skin absorption and other external factors, your hair replacement treatment will fade over time. The fading process differs for everyone, some need top ups more often than others. We offer a discounted SMP top up rate for previous customers who have had their original scalp treatment with Ultimate Scalp SMP.
Can I go in the sun with my new Scalp Pigment?
Try to avoid exposing your scalp pigment to the sun for long periods of time. Always cover up with a baseball cap, sun hat and/or high factor sun cream.
Do I need to keep my existing hair shaved?
Micropigmentation of the scalp is available for those with or without existing hair. For clients who have suffered partial hairloss and wish to add the appearance of density to remaining hair, do not need to shave their hair if the SMP treatment is to camouflage the thinning hair.
For clients who have lost a lot of hair on top of their heads (genetic male pattern baldness), it is highly advised to keep any existing hair shaved very short to blend in as much as possible with their new follicle impressions by SMP.
How should I shave my existing hair to match my Scalp follicle impressions?
In reality, hair is 3D and pigmentation ink on the scalp is 2D. We are trying to achieve a 3D look with a 2D solution, therefore it is best to shave the 3D “real hair” down to match the dimensions offered by the scalp pigment. We do NOT advise wet shaving your scalp as this indeed stresses out the skin and slowly removes layers of your skin, potentially effecting your new appearance. Wet shaving also adds a level of unwanted scalp shine that can otherwise be avoided. Ultimate Scalp SMP recommend either a 0.2-0.5mm beard trimmer/hair shaver with no guard, or a cordless 5 foil palm held rotary shaver.
If I have Grey hair, can I still have the Micropigmentation procedure on my scalp?
Indeed you can yes! All shades of hair are a similar colour when shaved down close to the skin, we can select a lighter hue of pigment to blend in with any grey hairs. Scalp SMP as mentioned previously lightens over time and can match the colour of your shaved grey very well.
How deep does the needle go into the scalp skin?
Scalp Micropigmentation only goes into the second layer of scalp skin. Nowhere near the depth of a traditional tattoo and certainly nowhere near any existing hair follicles under the skin. No blood, no pain!
What qualification should my Scalp Technician have?
Level 4 Advanced is the ultimate accreditation in Scalp Micropigmentation. I am fully qualified and trained by the world renowned Finishing Touches Group to level 4 Advanced, this includes knowledge on Skin Anatomy, Hair loss Fundamentals, Client Consultation & Aftercare, Pigment theory & retention, Specialist Equipment along with Health & Safety.
I have thinning hair and do not want to commit to shaving it off, can Scalp SMP work for me?
Scalp Micropigmentation can work in lots of hairloss situations. Depending on the location of your hairloss (ie the crown, hairline or general diffuse thinning) I may advise that you should brave the shave if you have a bald patch that has no natural hair coverage. This can be discussed when you Book Your Free SMP Consultation.
I have had a hair transplant, can I have Scalp Micropigmentation to add more density?
I have a lot of hair loss clients who have undergone either an FUE or FUT hair transplant and are looking to add density to compliment their new hair growth. They are astonished by the combined results, aswell as the instant results offered by Scalp SMP compared to very expensive and slow yield of their hair transplants.
Can SMP Micropigmentation cover scalp scars?
SMP is ideal for covering FUE and FUT hair transplant scars as well as natural scars or post operative head scars. I do NOT treat keloid scars.
Can Scalp SMP Treatment work on Alopecia sufferers?
I am seeing an increase of Traction Alopecia sufferers seeking our Scalp Pigmentation treatment. The results are remarkable. Alopecia Totalis sufferers may also be ideal candidates for scalp SMP.
I am female with thinning hair, can I have Scalp Micropigmentation?
Yes, it is not just men that experience hair loss! I often treat females who have experienced thinning hair around their parting, crown, hairline and sometimes all over. The approach here is to match the ink pigment with the the colour of the clients hair (darker than the pigment used when I am matching the shade of a shaved hair follicle.) This is purely a camouflaging process where pigment is placed between the existing hair in the thinning area, thus giving instant results.
What is the SMP Aftercare procedure?
You will be provided with aftercare documentation after your first Scalp SMP treatment.
How many Scalp Procedures do I need until my SMP treatment is finished?
Some SMP clinics offer 2 or 3 treatment sessions. This is where I stand out from the competition. This only causes a bad result with merging blurred dots and a unnatural finish. Scalp Micropigmentation is not a race to the finish line! All treatment plans are spread over 4 individual sessions (sometimes a 5th is offered in special circumstances). I believe in the more natural approach and this is achieved more accurately over 4 scalp treatments as density, shade and realism really make the difference to our clients.
